The construction of the New Expo Centre, in the former Agip refinery area in Rho-Pero on the outskirts of Milan and on the main road to the International Malpensa Airport, is the first stop in the Milan Expo "system" redevelopment process. The new expo centre is designed by Massimiliano Fuksas, one of the leading international architectural experts in the study of urban problems in large metropolitan areas. It provides exhibiters and visitors with eight enormous pavilions, catering services, parking and infrastructures. All these features rank Lombardy's large new expo centre at the top of the world expo market for size, practicality and architectural quality.

The exhibition district in the heart of the city consists of eleven modern pavilions, with a total of 115 thousand square metres gross under cover. The hub is still to be found in Milan, even after the opening of the new fair center at Rho. These are more modern, functional pavilions in the "historical" area, partially rehabilitated in 2006 and which continue to host exhibitions which are smaller in size and present less logistical problems, plus events which cannot be held outside the city.
