The Naviglio Grande, which dates back to the 12th century, has had, during the years, a great influence on its surroundings. In fact, thanks to the abundance of water, this part of the Milanese province has maintained a great agricultural identity; the Naviglio was also very important as an artery and for commercial exchanges. The landscape of this area is characterised by wonderful and luxurious villas which are almost all private residences. The imprint of the Visconti, the Milanese family in power at the end of the 13th century up to the 15th, can be seen especially around Abbiategrasso, an old centre about 6km away from the Ticino river, characterised by the presence of very precious monuments.
