South of Milan, in a prevalently agricultural landscape, one finds the Milanese Abbeys:
Chiaravalle and Morimondo of the Cistercian order; Viboldone and Mirasole, belonging to the order of the Humiliati. In the countryside around the abbeys, the monks carried out great land reclamation works, introducing the new water meadows.
An important centre of the low Milanese plain is Meleganano, where one finds one of the most important Lombard buildings of the Middle Ages: Castello Mediceo. Closer to the city one finds urban and industrial settlements arisen during the post-war, particularly in the ENI city, Metanopoli.
