San Colombano al Lambro
The Ibanini - which is what the inhabitants of San Colombano are called - trace the origin of their name to the Irish monk Colman, in Latin Colombanus, who was said to have stopped here on his way to Bobbio, where he is supposed to have founded the famous monastery in 614.
The village is located at the foot of an extensive hilly area covered vineyards, the Colle di San Colombano, and has a history that reaches back to the Middle Ages.
A plaque on a surviving tower of the local castle recalls that Francesco Petrarca stayed here in 1353, the guest of the Milanese Archbishop Giovanni Visconti.

Notes
What is popularly called the "wine of Milan" is more precisely San Colombano DOC, a series of three red wines made from Croatina, Barbera and Uva Rara grapes, plus two white wines made from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes.
In terms of wine, in 1995 the Colle di San Colombano also became a TGI - Typical Geographic Indication - under the name "Collina del Milanese": the very typical Verdea white wine is only produced here.
The San Colombano agricultural area is crossed by the wine route of the same name the Strada del Vino San Colombano, which runs for sixty kilometres between Milan and Lodi.
