Milan from above
Seeing Milan from above is a unique and exciting experience; you can catch details that even those who have lived in the city for a long time have never seen. If you are in piazza Duomo, it is worth going up to the roof terraces to view the breathtaking panorama that appears before your eyes. On a good day, when the sky is clear, you can see the mountain range of the Alps. You can go up on foot or by lift. Just a short walk from the Castello Sforzesco, in Parco Sempione, not for from the Triennial building, stands the Torre Branca. The tower, designed by Giò Ponti, is considered a true work of art and its viewing deck provides a striking view of Milan from above.
Beside the Duomo is the large La Rinascente store. You can spend some time shopping there and then go up to the 7th floor where a restaurant/bar with a terrace allows you to enjoy a particularly striking view. It seems as if you could almost touch the spires of the Duomo!
On the other side of the square is the new Museum of Contemporary Art, that is an absolute must to have a different perspective of the façade of the cathedral and even of the marvellous square. In fact, the monumental staircase, the terrace and the balcony offer a spectacular view.
A few steps away from piazza Duomo, in piazza Diaz, stands the large sky scraper whose 15th floor houses the Martini Terrazza. This is a space that is closed to the public and opens only for special occasions.
On the east side of the city centre in Cinque Giornate square is another famous department store "Coin". From the last floor you can admire from a different point of view the monumet by G. Grandi dedicated to a controversial period of the history of Milan, that took place in the 19th century.
Everyone, however, can go up to the viewing deck located on the 31st floor of the Pirelli Tower, beside Milan Centrale station, affectionately referred to as the "Pirellone" by the Milanese. Nearby, you can see the Palazzo Lombardia complex, the new seat of the Lombardy regional government. The building is located between vias Melchiorre Gioia, Restelli, Algarotti and Galvani. It consists of a reinforced concrete, steel and glass tower, taller than the Pirelli skyscraper, the "old" regional government headquarters, and is surrounded by a system of connected buildings, between seven and nine floors in height, into which is set a spectacular piazza covered by a transparent vault.
