Art & Photography
For centuries Milan has been home to important and interesting collections of art and the one most worthy of a mention is the Pinacoteca di Brera, a picture gallery that houses masterpieces by Giovanni Bellini, Andrea Mantegna, Piero della Francesca, Raphael and Caravaggio. The Pinacoteca Ambrosiana gallery is also able to boast about its priceless treasures such as Raphael’s cartoons for The School of Athens and Caravaggio’s Basket of Fruit.
The magnificent Sforzesco Castle houses the city’s museums and contains masterpieces such as Michelangelo’s renowned Rondanini Pietà and the Sala delle Asse (Room of Wooden Panels), a room frescoed totally by Leonardo. The Palazzo dell’Arengario, transformed into the Museum of the Twentieth Century (Museo del Novecento) offers an exhibition space testifying Italian history of art from the beginning of the Twentieth century to the present day... What must not be overlooked is the fact that the area of Milan is the guardian of a great past, looks to the future with great fervour and has a desire to experiment. The Museum of Contemporary Photography in Cinisello Balsamo is just one such example. It is the first public museum dedicated to modern photography and more in general the technologically created image.
