Hotel businesses are classified as follows:
- Hotels, when most of the accommodation consists of bedrooms
- Residential Hotels (R.T.A.) when the accommodation consists of apartments with one or more rooms and cooking facilities.
All types of hotel business are classified on the basis of
obligatory minimum standards imposed by law and classification is compulsory in order for the
relevant Local Authority to issue a trading licence.
Unauthorised use
As well as the usual bedrooms, hotels may include apartments with a
kitchen or cooking facilities.
Similarly, residential hotels may provide both apartments and bedrooms.
The business is classified by the preponderance of bedrooms or apartments (not the number of
people it can sleep) and the services the business must supply are determined by which category it
falls into.
Badges
It is compulsory for hotels and businesses providing outdoor
accommodation to display the badge of the category assigned to them in an easily visible position.
The badge must conform to the example designed by the Lombardy Region.
For Bed & Breakfast establishments the choice to display the badge is optional
