Abbiategrasso and the Morimondo Abbey

In the province of Milan near Novara and Bergamo it is obvious in the congested metropolitan areas that these are the arteries of productivity. On the other hand, the south and west of the capital, around the Navigli and the Ticino, the scenario changes to a large green area. There lies an oasis a stone's throw from Milan where you can take a tour that will lead you through nature, where you may have glimpses of architectural and artistic beauty, and enjoy the local products from small towns, traditions, festivals and markets. Abbiategrasso is the largest centre in the south-west of Milan, while Morimondo is a small town that is still visited every year by many tourists whom go to see the great Abbey.

We will arrive in Abbiategrasso, the largest centre in the south-west of with the history of the Milanese, monuments and attractions . It was built at the junction between the two major channels of Lower Lombardy The Naviglio Grande receives its water from Ticino, flowing onwards to London, and the Naviglio of Bereguardo, that detaches at Abbiategrasso flows towards Pavia

We will meet the first group from Abbiategrasso when they arrive from Milan alongside the Naviglio Grande Castelletto.

Amongst the Castelletto and the centre of Abbiategrasso, along Viale Mazzini, are some important buildings: At numbers 95 and 97 the elegant Palazzo Corio, at number 83 the Palace Citterio Hall Cocini, at number 45 the church of San Rocco and the number 25, near the railway station, Palazzo Sacchei.

As always near the railway station, is the most important building: il Visconteo Castle.

To the side of the Castle, over the road, is the Kiosk of San Carlo in the tree lined Garibaldi square.

Near the Castle, the original medieval village of Abbiategrasso stands in the area between Via Santa Maria, Via Angelo Teotti, V Giornate square and San Martino avenue: known today as the neighbourhood of Santa Maria. Medieval is the former church of Santa Maria, we can get away with the same name.

Along the street Angelo Teotti you will see the medieval facades or the 18th century Palazzo said to be the House of Rome, now the representation of Banca Agricola Mantovana.

From Castello Visconteo take Matteotti avenue, the most direct route to the towns central square: to number 41 the 18th century Palazzo Cattaneo.

Proceed along the avenue to the brick front Pianca Albini Household, which overlooks Golgi square.

In front, stretches the façade of the Pia Casa Incurabili today known as the Golgi Institute, named after the Nobel prize winner Camillo Golgi.

And now we arrive in the very heart of Abbiategrasso: Marconi square.

From Marconi square take the path from Annoni way, at number 28 is the elegant Palazzo of the same name.

Continue along Ticino way, to number 26 where you will find Palazzo Pionnio.

We will head back towards the nearby avenue Cattaneo, in the area where we will find the hospital at number 2 Villa Sanchioli.

Among the castle, via Felice Cavallotti, via Alessandro Manzoni and via Serafino dell'Uomo there is an urban park called Fossa Viscontea.

We will complete our visit in the centre of Abbiategrasso passing through via Borsani along the way where we can see the church of San Bernardino

In addition, between via Borsani and via Confalonieri we can also admire the most important historical presence in the city: the Basilica of Santa Maria Nuova.

In the case that we we lose each other we will meet in the centre, at the Palazzo Arconati between via Fratelli Bandiera and via Goffredo Mameli.

If you wander off, in the same area, there is a 15th century mill that still works in via del Mulino.

Finally, a place a little out of the way, next to the bypass and close to the Magenta you will find the former convent of Annunciata, recovered between 1997 and 2006.

Leaving Abbiategrasso and heading to Morimondo, along Ticino, we will arrive in the small Ozzero.

We will go into the small square where the town hall is housed in Palazzo Cagnola.

The parish of San Siro is a short distance.

Located on the highest point of the village, is the 16th century Palazzo dei Centurioni that you may admire from afar, it inaccessible due to the surrounding dense vegetation.

We continue our walk along the streets of the town, in the direction of Ticino where we will see the Palazzo Barzizza.

Noteworthy, for those of you interested in gourmet food: The farm stay Calcaterra and the Agricultural agency Cascina Selva.

Leaving the centre, in an area smaller than Bugo, next to Highway 526, we can stop at the 15th century oratory of St. Francis, restored several times over the centuries and decorated with frescoes. We can also find 15th century frescoes in the churches of Sant'Alberto and the surrounding castles of Morimondo.

At first glance Morimondo seems to look similar to the other Lower areas, at least until you discover the great Abbey amongst the meadows.

That signals the agriturismo Cascina Lasso.

After the visit we can continue our journey through the surrounding countryside: and make some other pleasant discoveries. For example, a short distance in the direction of Ticino is Cascina Fiorentina and from there we will go from Morimondo to Besate, Fallavecchia.
