Discovering Leonardo's Canals

"Itinerario delle Conche" ("The Basin Route")

An historical and cultural tour of Milan's canal district. Visitors are given the chance to immerse themselves in the historical places furrowed by the barges that supplied old Milan with a variety of goods. Departing from "Alzaia Naviglio Grande" (Grand Canal Towpath) 4, along the first stretch of the trip you can see the "Vicolo dei Lavandai" ("Washerwomen's Alley"). Further ahead, a view can be had of one of the most important monumental complexes, comprised of St. Christopher's church, bridge and wash-house. We will enter the dock and then pass onto the Pavese Canal as far as its first hydraulic support, the famous "Conchetta" Lock, which you will be able to see in operation.

Completely by boat...departing from the "Alzaia Naviglio Grande" (Grand Canal Towpath) 4.

During the first stage of the trip we will see the "Vicolo dei Lavandai" ("Washerwomen's Alley"), one of the many communal wash-houses where, for centuries, women did their laundry.

We will then continue until we arrive at number 66 of the Alzaia Naviglio Grande, at Palazzo Galloni, which is the location of the engraving centre. We make our way towards one of the most important monumental complexes along the first stretch of the canal, and also in Milan: St. Christopher's church, with its ancient bridge and characteristic wash-house.

Turning back, we pass beneath the "Scodellino" ("little bowl") bridge, so named because of the nearby inns, and we enter the dock, once the port of exchange for trade with Lake Maggiore.

We proceed along the Pavese Canal, which we will follow as far as the first hydraulic support, the famous "Conchetta", where we can watch a simulation of how it worked in the time of Leonardo. Mooring at the Alzaia Naviglio Grande ...we return to the city.
