From Milan to Cernusco sul Naviglio

The first stretch of the Martesana canal waterway

The first stretch of the route, which begins from the municipality of Milan, follows the towpath along the left bank of the canal through varied and interesting urban scenery. Care should be taken when you reach via Melchiorre Gioia as works are being carried out on the railway overpass there. Following the towpath (still along the left bank), you pass through Vimodrone, through the periurban area to the north of the underground railway line, until you arrive near the Gaggiolo quarry, a stretch of water to the right of the Martesana canal as you enter Cernusco sul Naviglio. Here the fields give way to more and more buildings until you reach the public gardens in the centre of the town. The route is level and runs alongside the watercourse. Villa Uboldo and Villa Alari-Viscontisi can be seen on the opposite bank from the towpath.

The route begins right in the centre of the town, near the Cassina de' Pomm in via Melchiorre Gioia.

Taking via Tofane, you go past three railway bridges and arrive in the Gorla area, an ancient district of Milan, filled with history, that formed an independent municipality in the past. At the end of via Tofane you crosses viale Monza, which has heavy traffic.
The bike ride continues peacefully and safely along the towpath, past small green areas and ancient balustrade houses, where old constructions and renovated buildings stand side by side.

After viale Monza, you proceed along via Bestelli and come to Martesana Park, a large green area that leads to the centre of a recently built residential zone. Going further along, you reach via Padova, where the route turns to the left and becomes via Idro. The scenery along this stretch is mainly industrial.

The canal now flows past warehouses and industrial buildings and passes under the ring road near the Gobba farmstead. As you arrive at the suburb of Gaggiolo you can see Villa Cazzaniga.

After a few kilometres you come to Cernusco sul Naviglio, where you can see the garden and lodges of villa Alari Visconti and, on via Uboldo, the villa of the same name.
