Gorla

In the past there were villas and gardens along the Martesana canal in the suburb of Gorla, a district on the north-eastern outskirts of Milan. Some ancient buildings can still be seen today from the towpath. The Martesana canal was the driving force for these places, providing water to irrigate fields, enabling the transportation of goods and facilitating the growth of industries.

Notes

The old Gorla Bridge, which the present-day bridge on viale Monza, marked the history of the suburb of Gorla in several stages. The area was the scene of a massacre during the Second World War caused by an aerial bombardment that hit a primary school. A monument made by the sculptor Remo Brioschi was erected to the "little martyrs of Gorla" in remembrance of the victims.

The route begins right in the centre of the town, near the Cassina de' Pomm in via Melchiorre Gioia.

Taking via Tofane, you go past three railway bridges and arrive in the Gorla area, an ancient district of Milan, filled with history, that formed an independent municipality in the past. At the end of via Tofane you crosses viale Monza, which has heavy traffic.
The bike ride continues peacefully and safely along the towpath, past small green areas and ancient balustrade houses, where old constructions and renovated buildings stand side by side.

After viale Monza, you proceed along via Bestelli and come to Martesana Park, a large green area that leads to the centre of a recently built residential zone. Going further along, you reach via Padova, where the route turns to the left and becomes via Idro. The scenery along this stretch is mainly industrial.

The canal now flows past warehouses and industrial buildings and passes under the ring road near the Gobba farmstead. As you arrive at the suburb of Gaggiolo you can see Villa Cazzaniga.

After a few kilometres you come to Cernusco sul Naviglio, where you can see the garden and lodges of villa Alari Visconti and, on via Uboldo, the villa of the same name.
